Albuquerque was originally settled as a Spanish colonial center in 1706. Pictures and photos of Albuquerque reflect the city's Spanish heritage. Albuquerque was one of the northern-most stops along the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail which ran north from Mexico City. The early 1900s ushered in a period of growth and prosperity for Albuquerque. The Rio Grande provided the city with the water source needed for this desert city to thrive and grow.

A combination of events led to Albuquerque's formal incorporation not the least of which the construction of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in 1880. Still, it would not be until 1891 that Albuquerque would be formally incorporated.
